The CSSS de Gatineau identifies each client not once, but twice
Since the winter of 2011, the CSSS de Gatineau has been applying an additional user safety measure: double identification of users.
Consequently, before any care or service is provided, staff will make sure beyond doubt that the right care is provided to the right person. For example, staff members may validate the information on your health insurance card using two data elements concerning you, such as your surname and given name and your date of birth. They may also ask you for an identification document showing your address, to make sure they have the right file on hand.
This is, in fact, recognized practice to improve user safety. Clients should then not be surprised if staff ask more questions, client condition permitting, or check more thoroughly their hospital card, photo ID card or hospital identification bracelet. A person's relatives may also be requested to assist staff members in collecting the two data elements required for double identification. However, it is important to note that no confidential information will be required, such as social insurance number, credit card number, etc. Double identification is an additional safety measure aiming to ensure, beyond reasonable doubt, that the right care is provided to the right person.
Double identification applies at all times: within the hospital environment, during outpatient visits at the hospital, at the CLSC, when a person receives home care or services and during stays in a long-term care facility.
The CSSS de Gatineau relies on public participation to help provide ever safer care and services to its clients, and make safety a shared responsibility.
